Summary: In the aftermath of a brutal battle, Lt. Damien Toth finds a wounded enemy soldier on the battlefield. The young man refuses to give his name and prefers death to captivity and enslavement. Impressed by his grit, Damien claims him and renames him, promising him freedom after seven years of service. But 'Cole' has a bloody past and secrets that will come back to haunt them both .
Notes: For those of you who have read other Halcrest stories, this one takes place before the events of Brothers of the Watch and The Outcast, but at the same time as Scarce Loyalty. Links to prior parts of this story can be found at the Sons of Obsidian Master Post
( Damien took a deep breath, struggling to gain control over his fury and his terror that someone would report the incident and Cole would hang. He walked behind his desk, sat down and toyed with the quill and the letter opener, hoping that Cole wouldn’t see his hands shaking. “Do you still want to die, Cole? Is that it?” )
